The Paper Knot : 9/6/2006

Most brides flip through dozens of magazines envisioning their perfect wedding dress. When they see it, they just know that the dress they have selected is the one for them; however, in some cases, the dress is perfect until they try it on and realize that it isn’t the right fit. These are the things brides need to consider if they want to look their best on that special day.

Remember, you have had years to perfect your day-to-day wardrobe, but picking formalwear is not always that easy even if we know our bodies. There are hundreds of bridal gown styles: How do you know which one is right for you? - Ask a consultant or take a friend. First, let the professionals do their job. They have years of experience to assist you in picking the right gown depending on your height, bust and waist size, budget, and even the theme of your wedding.

These are a few key things to remember when looking for your perfect dress:

If you are a top-heavy bride, try a fitted or A-line dress. It helps with slimming you down, accentuating the body and creating a more hourglass shape. Avoid full skirts. They can make you look large all over and create a "rounded" effect.

If you are a bottom-heavy bride, the opposite is true. For your shape, it would be better to choose a dress that is fuller on the bottom to camouflage your hips, buttocks or thigh areas.

If you are petite, go for a straight, fitted dress. Many short women feel that straight dresses will only emphasize their height, or lack there of; however, because of the sheath/column effect, it creates an elongated symmetry and gives the illusion of greater height.

If you are tall, choose an A-line gown. Choose a gown with a long bodice that drops at the lower part of the waistline.

The one style of dress that seems to fit all body shapes and sizes is the A-line dress. You can change up the style depending on your choice of neckline, material, decorating beading/embellishments, or color. However, always remember to choose the dress shape that you most feel comfortable in, one that will give you confidence for your big day!
