Getting the Best Shot: Selecting Your Wedding Photographer

Bridal Edition : 2/14/2006

While all of your vendors are important, the photographer is perhaps the most important vendor you could select. Here are some tips that should help you in selecting the best photographer for you.

  1. Does the photographer have a website? Most good photographers have utilized the web as a way to show their work. Having access to their website helps you to evaluate quite a few things about the photographer from the outset. You can see a nice sampling of their work and you can evaluate whether or not they are up to date on the latest computer technology.

  2. How will you receive your pictures? Will the photographer give you proofs by printing them out or will he or she provide you with a CD of images? Some photographers provide you with a CD in addition to your package so that you may make duplicates at your own convenience.

  3. Does the photographer have assistants? Having an assistant gives you the potential for several different shots from different angles. However, be sure that you don’t have to pay additional money for the assistant or at least clear up that matter at the outset.

  4. Does the photographer’s style reflect your own? Do you like formal shots or photojournalistic shots? Discuss styles with your photographer so that you are both on the same page.

  5. Are you the photographer’s only engagement on that day? While this is not a problem, you will want to be sure that your photographer will not try to rush off from your wedding in order to do another. Sometimes photographers over-commit themselves; subsequently, this makes the day less pleasurable for you because they are in a rush.

  6. How experienced is your photographer? Most experienced photographers will provide you with the important shots. They understand how weddings work and generally handle the job with ease. This is not to say that photographers with less experience wouldn’t be just as good. In fact, some of the less experienced photographers might approach your event with a fresh eye that an experienced photographer might not have. It is up to you and your comfort level.

  7. Are their prices reasonable for you? Most couples are willing to sacrifice the ultimate expense for pictures and rightfully so. Your pictures are the main visual representation of your day and it is very important to get the best photographer possible. Just be sure to make sure the product matches the expense. Also, be sure that the contract stipulates fees and overtime expenses clearly.

Your wedding photos will have great value for years to come. It is important to select a photographer that reflects your style and will do his or her best to capture your wedding beautifully.
