Having Great Taste!: Selecting the Best Caterer for You

Bridal Edition : 2/14/2006

The food you serve at your wedding definitely has a great impact on your day. Poorly done food can leave a “bad taste” (pardon the pun) in your guests mouths to say the least. The following are tips that can help you select the best caterer for you:

  1. Has anyone you’ve known with similar tastes in food used them? If you have the opinion of someone who shares your taste in food, that will help immensely in deciding whom to use.

  2. Do they offer tastings? Of course sampling in person is the best option. Many caterers offer tastings or samplings of menu items. See if you can schedule something like that with the potential caterer.

  3. What materials do they need? Some caterers come fully prepared with all the necessary materials. However, some want you to provide them with things like table cloths or other items that you wouldn’t have necessarily thought of. Find these things out up front before you commit.

  4. Where will the food be prepared? If your reception hall doesn’t have a kitchen, your caterer will have to prepare the food elsewhere. Is their preparation area clean? Visit it to see what sanitary measures they take with their food preparation.

  5. What are their portion sizes? Of course the time that you have your reception will dictate the meal. Generally at evening weddings, dinner is usually served and at afternoon or mid-morning weddings a lighter meal is offered. Whatever the time of day, be sure to get an understanding with your caterer regarding what constitutes enough food for you.

  6. Will they provide servers or attendants? Some caterers include the work crew and servers with the overall cost of catering the event. However, some require an additional cost or a guaranteed amount of tips before they will provide the service. Be sure to clear this matter with your caterer beforehand in case you need to make alternative plans.

  7. How is their presentation? Attend an event of theirs or ask for pictures in order to see the visual representation of their food. This has a big impact on the overall quality of your wedding. Well presented food is very important on your day.

Select the best caterer that suits your tastes and style. Spend time trying a few out so that you can make the best decision for you. And on a charitable note, see if any additional food can be donated to a soup kitchen or organization in need.
